Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Honors PSJA ISD for Farm Fresh Challenge Achievement

SAN JUAN- The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Child Nutrition team completed the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Spring 2023 Farm Fresh Challenge and were recognized by the Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) Farm Fresh Challenge takes place in October of each year to coincide with Farm to School Month. The Challenge is open to all Child Nutrition Program (CNP) operators who participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Districts who pledge to participate are encouraged to serve local foods, teach local agriculture facts, and share their efforts on social media throughout the month.

PSJA ISD garnered this recognition for offering fresh, high-quality, locally sourced produce while instructing students about the agricultural process that puts food on tables. The district ensured to promote their Farm Fresh Challenge achievements on social media throughout the challenge to further champion and promote local foods in our schools.

"Participating in the Texas Farm Fresh Challenge has been pivotal in offering our students a well-rounded nutritional experience," said PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. "Our students not only develop lifelong healthy habits but also support our locally sourced agriculture. These efforts also align with sustainability implementation."

PSJA ISD is committed to student well-being by serving healthy, balanced meals, offering agricultural and nutrition education, and prioritizing local Texas foods. This dedication acknowledges the efforts of local farmers and ranchers who provide high-quality food.

“The Child Nutrition Program focuses in providing students with quality local produce that helps to inspire new attitudes towards good nutrition and healthy lifestyles,” said PSJA ISD Child Nutrition Administrator Pedro Contreras. “Receiving this recognition serves as a reminder that our team is collectively working towards ensuring our students are eating healthy.”
